Title: Vice President for Community Relations
Company: St. John’s University
Location: Jamaica, N.Y.
Joseph Sciame attended St. John’s University as both a day and night student before beginning work as assistant to the registrar, working in admissions registration and financial aid. Mr. Sciame has been in leadership positions at St. John’s University for 53 years, and a vice president since 1982, one of the longest held positions in the history of the institution. An exceptional public speaker, Mr. Sciame takes great pride in his work and in developing comprehensive community outreach programs. He also brings civic association leaders, community board leaders, local state senate, local government and student leaders together in an effort to keep the calm in the community, keeps a dialogue open on issues that affect the business, economic, security patrol, and campus issues, with the invitation to include community leaders into some of the activities on campus, and represents the University on a variety of boards. A multi-awarding-winning professional, who was even recognized by the Vatican with the rank of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher, Mr. Sciame attributes his success to his sense of compassion and his listening skills. He is not quick to judge and tries to find the strength in everybody. In the coming years, Mr. Sciame intends to continue on the same path, and possibly semi-retire, acting as a good will ambassador and consultant.
