With nearly four decades of professional experience in chemistry, Dr. Nelson believes that his success is a result of his patience, listening skills and ability to foster collaboration through enculturation. He has proved to be a valuable asset to Obiter Research during his career as a senior research chemist. His vast knowledge on the design and synthesis of specific functional molecules, understanding and application of environmental laws and regulations, and creative problem solving techniques have been instrumental in the creation of the next generation of surfactants.
Dr. Nelson cultivated his mastery in chemistry through a rigorous academic career. He completed a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1976. He relocated to Missouri where he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Master of Science in chemistry. Following a move to the Baltimore area, he attended The Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1989. Recognized for his excellent body of work, including more than 20 articles and three book chapters, Dr. Nelson was recently appointed to the adjunct faculty of the University of Illinois to teach environmental chemistry. He is also currently editing a book on green chemistry.
Outside of his profession, Dr. Nelson finds pleasure in outdoor and physical activities. He recently finished his second half marathon and improved upon his first time by six minutes. He also enjoys skiing, swimming and biking.
